Really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Totally relaxing and the gite was perfect. Was spotlessly clean and catered for everything. The surrounding area was superb and a joy to drive. Absolutely loved Vouvant. Well worth a visit and the restaurant Le Pic Vert was really nice. A lovely setting. Advise to get there as soon as it opens as place gets full very quickly. Best to book in advance not to disappoint. Thank you for a wonderful relaxing week and don't want to go home! Would definitely visit again and would definitely recommend.

What a fabulous week. The gite is great, clean and well equipped. Absolutely loved the area.

If you feel like a trip further afield, Saumur is a good day out. Beautiful chateau, then a visit to troglodyte dwellings. There is also a very good tank museum for the military enthusiasts.

Enjoyed our visits to La Rochelle and Vouvant

I would give Fontenay a miss, especially the chateau. Not much to see or good value for money.

Took lots and lots of photos.

Thank you to Carolyn for all her help and guidance. We would love to return again and again and ...
Kindest Regards

A fantastic holiday that was relaxing and free from stress!

The gite itself is fantastic and we have enjoyed beautifully warm evenings in the garden drinking wonderful wine and eating far too much cheese and bread.

La Rochelle is well worth a visit and we'd really recommend the park and ride which drops you off right in the centre - perfect for exploring. The seafood is fantastic and 13 euros for 3 courses is excellent.

This has been a fantastic holiday that has started a lifelong love of France ... we don't want to go home!!

Thank you for a wonderfullly relaxing fortnight in this beautiful corner of the world.

You made us all feel very welcome, and I'm sure little Eve will be asking after her new friends for ... well as long as a 2 yr old's memory lasts!

Wishing you all every happiness for the future

18th July - 25th July 2009

This was our second visit here and we will take away some more wonderful memories. The gite is perfect for two and was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. There are some beautiful country walks in the surrounding area and on a clear night, the view of the "Milky Way" is fantastic.

Recommendations are La Rochelle (especially the aquarium and the port of an evening), Ile de Ré (loads of beaches, beautiful villages and giant waffles at the port of St. Martin) and La Tranche sur Mer (nice beach and good shops).

More locally, the zoo at Mervent is worth a look and the best fun was paddling a boat at Venise Vert, but go to Petit Port Sauvage rather than the abbey as it is half the price.

Good restaurants are Le Grill de la Forge at La Tranche sur Mer and Le Pic Vert in Vouvant, but they're only open 7-9pm for evening meals so get there early

A very quiet, relaxing week here at the gite, our thanks to Carolyn and Stephen and family for their hospitality. A highly recommended place to come.

In the absence of Stephen, we would like to thank Carolyn, Eliot and Olivia for running a good ship. Ideal place for recharging batteries. Weather good, gite immaculate and lovely area. What more could you wish for - heaven!!

Carolyn & Steve, we've had a brilliant 10 days, by way of your home & the lovely gite. Thank you for letting us share your corner of the lovely Vendee. The setting is idyllic.

Nothing more to add about places to visit - Market in Fontenay on a Saturday morning excellent. A visit to "Venise Vert" - Coulon a must - even if it's packed in high summer - but if you take to the water, paddle your own boat, it's more fun! The weather has been kind to us.

We hope to come back to hear Eliot perform his first recorder recital in a few years time! And we made some great new friends in the way of the rabbit and the 3 french hens - now named Edgar, Gloria and Mary Pickford (because she eats roses)! They were great fun to watch. Thank you again

We have had a lovely week discovering the region. Stephen & Carolyn have been very helpful hosts. The local wines are excellent (from the local Spar). We ate out in La Rochelle and Vouvant and the meals were great and inexpensive. Wildlife is abundant. We have seen many birds without leaving the garden including Stonechat, Whinchat, Golden Oriole, Red-legged Partridge, Hobby, Merlin, Wheatear, Redstart as well as a Red Squirrel feeding on the nut tree. Also a deer on the way home from the local bar.

We have had a very peaceful & relaxing week in Vendee, even with our 15 month old daughter! Stephen & Carolyn (& Eliot & Olivia) have been very welcoming & accommodating, especially with Alice (our daughter), the travel cot was ideal.
We would certainly recommend Vouvant for a pretty little town - we had a lovely 3 course meal at Auberge de Maitre Pannetier for only 16€!!
We enjoyed the beach at La Faute-sur-Mer - lovely sand dunes & stretches of white sands. Even if you are unlucky enough to pay for parking, it's only 2€ for the day.
Many thanks for making Alice's first holiday so memorable

22nd August 2008

We've had a wonderful week relaxing and sort of doing nothing (i.e. drinking wine & eating) but we've also searched out a few places to amuse us!
We recommend:

  • A day trip to the "Ile de Ré" - beautiful beaches & watersports - the port at St. Martin is lovely in the evening for dinner
  • The Zoo at Mervent is charming - small but very tasteful!
  • "Puy du Fou" was fun, especially if you like battles but take a picnic as there is no good food without booking.
  • We liked the "Pic Vert" for dinner best, for the view + ice-cream!
  • got some great wine from the cave at Pissotte (signed from the main road) and sat in the garden in the warm evenings

We hope everyone has as lovely a holiday as we have here!

We had a fantastically relaxing week - exactly what we were in need of. Very much enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside, even the 'rolling hills' explored on the bikes! The gite was perfect for us and the pool great in the September sunshine. Stephen and Carolyn were great hosts - we can particularly recommend coming in fruit season to sample the jams

A wonderful week away from the mayhem! Beautiful; gite with everything anyone could need. Great location for exploring with the beaches only an hour away and the chateaux of the Loire a couple of hours away. Or just let time stand still in the peacefulness of the gite's garden. Steve and Carolyn are the perfect hosts, friendly and helpful and very hospitable!
Thanks for a lovely stay and hope to see you all again soon!
